Answer
Hawaiian Pineapple Company
Answer
Hawaiian Pineapple Company
The Hawaiian Pineapple Company commissioned Georgia O’Keeffe to create paintings during her 1939 trip to Hawaii.
The company, now associated with the Dole name, invited O’Keeffe to produce images connected with its pineapple operations. She traveled to Hawaii in 1939 and spent about nine weeks there, making paintings of plants, flowers, and landscapes.
Although the commission involved pineapple, O’Keeffe’s Hawaiian paintings were not limited to that fruit. She also painted subjects such as papaya, banana, and other tropical forms after finding the pineapple plant difficult to depict in the way she wanted.
The trip expanded the geographical range of her work, but Hawaii did not replace New Mexico as her principal artistic home. The commission is also distinct from the later corporate identity of the Dole brand.
