Which company commissioned Georgia O'Keeffe to create paintings after she visited Hawaii in 1939?

The story behind the answer

The Hawaiian Pineapple Company commissioned Georgia O'Keeffe to create paintings after she visited Hawaii in 1939.

The company, later associated with the Dole Food Company, invited O'Keeffe to Hawaii to produce images for an advertising campaign. She spent about three months there, traveling among several islands and painting plants, flowers, and landscapes.

O'Keeffe produced a group of Hawaiian works, including paintings of papayas, heliconias, and waterfalls. Her imagery was not limited to pineapple, even though the commission came from a pineapple company.

The Hawaii paintings form a distinct episode in her career between her established New Mexico subjects and later work. They are sometimes described simply as commercial art, but O'Keeffe retained control over what she painted and made a substantial body of independent-looking works during the trip.
