Meta Platforms changed its corporate name from Facebook in 2021 while remaining among the world’s largest companies by market capitalization.
The rebranding was announced in October 2021. Meta said the new name reflected a broader focus beyond the Facebook social-network service, including virtual and augmented reality, social platforms, messaging, and other technologies. The Facebook app kept its name, while the parent company became Meta Platforms.
Meta’s principal platforms include Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger. The company earns most of its revenue from advertising, although it also develops hardware and virtual-reality products through Reality Labs.
A corporate name change does not automatically change a company’s ownership or business operations. It can, however, affect stock-market identifiers and public branding. Meta’s shares trade on the Nasdaq under the ticker META, while its historical filings and older articles may still use Facebook Inc. or the former ticker FB.
