Meta changed its corporate name from Facebook to Meta in October 2021.
Chief executive Mark Zuckerberg announced the rebranding on October 28, 2021. The new name reflected the company’s intention to build a broader collection of social, virtual-reality, and augmented-reality products under one corporate identity.
Facebook remained the name of the company’s flagship social-networking service. Other major products included Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger, which continued operating as separate consumer brands within Meta’s family of applications.
The change did not create a new independent business or remove Facebook from the company’s history. It changed the parent company’s corporate identity and stock-market ticker from FB to META. Meta’s Reality Labs division develops virtual- and augmented-reality hardware and software, while its Family of Apps division contains the major social platforms.
