Which company briefly exceeded US$1 trillion in market value on its first trading day in Shanghai in 2007?

The story behind the answer

PetroChina briefly exceeded US$1 trillion in market value on its first trading day in Shanghai in 2007.

PetroChina’s A-shares began trading on the Shanghai Stock Exchange on November 5, 2007. A surge in the share price briefly gave the company a market capitalization above one trillion US dollars, making it the first listed company reported to reach that level at the time.

The company is the publicly traded arm of China National Petroleum Corporation, one of China’s major state-owned energy groups. PetroChina’s business includes oil and gas exploration, production, refining, and sales.

The valuation later fell sharply as the initial-market enthusiasm faded. This episode is often confused with Apple’s 2018 milestone: PetroChina reached the level earlier, but Apple became the first US company to do so and later established more sustained trillion-dollar market-cap milestones.
