Which company briefly became the world's most valuable publicly traded company after its 2007 Shanghai IPO?

The story behind the answer

PetroChina briefly became the world’s most valuable publicly traded company after its 2007 Shanghai IPO.

PetroChina’s A-share listing on the Shanghai Stock Exchange in November 2007 attracted enormous investor demand. On its first trading day, its market capitalization briefly exceeded $1 trillion, placing it above ExxonMobil and other global giants by that measure.

The valuation did not remain at that level. The share price fell sharply after the debut, illustrating why market capitalization rankings can change quickly when a company’s stock is volatile. A company can be large in revenue, assets, or production without holding the top market-cap position.

PetroChina is the listed arm of China National Petroleum Corporation, one of China’s major state-owned energy groups. It operates in oil and gas exploration, production, refining, transportation, and sales. The 2007 episode remains one of the clearest examples of an IPO temporarily reshaping the global market-cap table.
