Nvidia briefly became the world’s most valuable public company in January 2025 after its share price surged. Investors reacted to the company’s central role in supplying chips for artificial-intelligence computing.
Nvidia’s rise was driven by demand for graphics processing units, or GPUs, that can perform many calculations in parallel. Major technology companies use these processors to train and run AI models, creating a large market for Nvidia’s hardware, software, and networking products.
The ranking changed rapidly because market capitalization depends on live share prices. Nvidia, Apple, and Microsoft repeatedly traded places near the top as investors reassessed growth expectations, interest rates, technology spending, and competitive threats.
The event also showed why “most valuable” should be defined carefully. Market capitalization measures equity value, while enterprise value includes debt and cash. Those measures can produce different rankings.
