Microsoft briefly became the world’s most valuable public company in January 2024 after a surge in AI-related demand.
Microsoft overtook Apple by market capitalization in January 2024 as investors responded to its position in cloud computing and artificial intelligence. The ranking was not permanent: market values fluctuate with share prices, and Apple and Microsoft have repeatedly exchanged the top position.
Microsoft’s AI exposure included its investment in OpenAI, the integration of generative-AI features into products, and demand for Azure cloud services. The company also owns major software, gaming, and professional-networking businesses, including Windows, Office, Xbox, and LinkedIn.
A company’s market-cap ranking does not mean it has the largest revenue or the most employees. It is a real-time valuation of publicly traded equity. Small daily share-price movements can therefore change the order even when the underlying businesses have not materially changed.
