PetroChina briefly became the world’s most valuable listed company during its 2007 Shanghai IPO.
PetroChina’s A-share listing in Shanghai in November 2007 produced a dramatic first-day rise. Its market capitalization briefly exceeded US$1 trillion, making it the first company to reach that level before the valuation quickly fell as trading conditions changed.
PetroChina is the publicly traded arm of China National Petroleum Corporation, one of China’s major state-owned energy groups. Its business includes exploration, production, refining, chemicals, marketing, and natural gas. The company’s size and strategic importance helped attract intense investor attention during China’s stock-market boom.
The episode is often confused with Saudi Aramco’s 2019 milestone. PetroChina was an early company to touch a trillion-dollar valuation, but Saudi Aramco later became the first non-US company to sustain a major modern trillion-dollar listing milestone after its IPO. Market capitalization records can be temporary because share prices change immediately after listing.
