Apple briefly became the world’s first publicly traded company valued at US$3 trillion in January 2022.
The milestone occurred during intraday trading on the Nasdaq, when Apple’s share price reached the level required for its total equity value to equal about US$3 trillion. Because share prices move continuously, a company can touch a market-cap threshold without ending the session above it.
Apple’s progression from US$1 trillion to US$2 trillion and then US$3 trillion illustrated the scale of its global consumer ecosystem. The iPhone remained central, while services and products such as Macs, iPads, Apple Watches, and AirPods broadened its revenue base.
This event is different from being the first company to close a trading day above US$3 trillion. Financial reports may therefore use terms such as “intraday” and “closing” to describe different versions of the same milestone.
