Which company bought Sun Microsystems in 2010, gaining control of Java and MySQL?

The story behind the answer

Oracle bought Sun Microsystems in 2010, gaining control of Java and MySQL.

Oracle announced its agreement to acquire Sun Microsystems in 2009, and the transaction closed in January 2010 after regulatory review. Sun had developed or owned influential technologies including Java, the Solaris operating system, SPARC servers, and the MySQL database.

The acquisition strengthened Oracle's position as an integrated enterprise-technology company. Oracle could offer customers databases, application software, operating systems, and hardware through one corporate group.

Java and MySQL remained distinct technologies after the acquisition. Java is a programming language and platform, while MySQL is a relational database system. Oracle's ownership of them does not mean that Oracle invented either technology; both originated at Sun before the purchase.
