Tesla became the world’s most valuable automaker by market capitalization in 2020.
Tesla’s shares rose sharply as investors anticipated rapid growth in electric vehicles, battery technology and software-enabled transportation. In July 2020, its market value surpassed Toyota’s, making Tesla the highest-valued publicly traded car company even though Toyota produced many more vehicles.
This comparison highlights the difference between market capitalization and current operating scale. Market capitalization reflects what investors believe a company may earn in the future, while production volume measures what it is making now. Tesla’s valuation therefore became controversial because it greatly exceeded the values of much larger traditional manufacturers by vehicle output.
Tesla was founded in 2003 and began delivering the Roadster in 2008. Its Model 3 and Model Y later became central to the company’s global expansion and helped make electric vehicles a major focus for established automakers.
