Apple became the world’s first publicly traded company valued at $3 trillion during intraday trading in 2022.
Apple briefly reached a $3 trillion market capitalization during trading on January 3, 2022. The company’s share price rose to the level required for the milestone before retreating, so the achievement was an intraday valuation rather than necessarily a closing-market record.
The distinction matters because financial reports often separate intraday market capitalization from a valuation calculated at the closing price. Both figures are based on the same basic measure: share price multiplied by shares outstanding.
Apple’s record reflected strong investor expectations for the iPhone ecosystem, services revenue, and future products. Microsoft later crossed the $3 trillion level as well. The milestone did not mean Apple had $3 trillion in cash; it represented the market value assigned to its equity by investors.
