Tesla became the sixth company to reach a $1 trillion market capitalization in October 2021.
Tesla’s shares rose sharply after the car-rental company Hertz announced an order for 100,000 electric vehicles. The rally pushed Tesla’s market value above the trillion-dollar mark, placing it among companies such as Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, and Saudi Aramco.
Tesla’s valuation reflected expectations for rapid electric-vehicle adoption, battery technology, manufacturing expansion, and software-related revenue. Its market value was unusually large relative to its vehicle deliveries at the time, prompting debate about how investors priced future growth.
Market-cap rankings are not permanent. Share prices, buybacks, new listings, and currency movements can all change the order, which is why a historical “sixth” ranking should not be read as a current one.
