Which company became the second publicly traded firm to surpass a US$2 trillion market capitalization in August 2020?

The story behind the answer

Apple became the second publicly traded firm to surpass a US$2 trillion market capitalization in August 2020.

Apple crossed US$2 trillion on August 19, 2020, roughly two years after becoming the first company to reach US$1 trillion. Its market value rose as investors rewarded strong demand for devices and the continuing expansion of services such as the App Store, iCloud, and Apple Music.

Saudi Aramco had already passed US$2 trillion after its 2019 listing, making Apple the second company to reach that level. Apple’s milestone was therefore different from being the first overall and from being the first US company to do so.

Market capitalization changes with the stock price and can fluctuate daily. It does not represent a company’s annual sales or a government-assessed valuation.
