Apple became the first US$1 trillion publicly traded technology company in 2018.
Apple reached the milestone in August 2018, when its share price lifted the total market value of its outstanding shares above one trillion dollars. The achievement made Apple the first public company in the technology sector to reach that widely recognized threshold.
The milestone followed years of growth after the iPhone’s 2007 launch. Apple combined hardware sales with a growing services business, including digital content, subscriptions, payments, and commissions from the App Store.
A company’s market capitalization can differ from its enterprise value, which also accounts for debt and cash. It can also differ from revenue and profit. Those distinctions explain why a trillion-dollar market cap should not be interpreted as one trillion dollars of annual sales or cash reserves.
