Berkshire Hathaway became the first U.S. company outside the technology sector to exceed a $1 trillion market capitalization.
Berkshire passed the $1 trillion level in August 2024, making it the first non-technology U.S. company to achieve that valuation. Its shares rose after the company reported strong quarterly results and investors continued to value its diversified businesses and large investment portfolio.
The company is led by Warren Buffett, who transformed Berkshire from a struggling textile manufacturer into a holding company. Its businesses include insurance, railroads, utilities, energy, manufacturing, and retail.
Berkshire has two publicly traded share classes, Class A and Class B. The existence of those classes does not change the basic market-cap calculation: the value combines the market price and total shares outstanding.
