Tesla became the first U.S. company founded in the 21st century to reach a $1 trillion market capitalization.
Tesla crossed the $1 trillion valuation on October 25, 2021, after its share price surged following news of a major vehicle order from Hertz. Tesla had been founded in 2003, making it much younger than the technology companies that had previously reached the milestone.
The company’s valuation reflected expectations about electric-vehicle growth, battery technology, charging infrastructure, and future software-related revenue. Tesla’s market value was also influenced by investor enthusiasm surrounding chief executive Elon Musk and the broader transition away from internal-combustion vehicles.
A high market capitalization does not guarantee that a company is the largest by sales, production, or profit. Tesla’s milestone was especially notable because automakers are capital-intensive businesses and because the company had reached the valuation after a comparatively short public-market history.
