Apple became the first company to surpass a $2 trillion market capitalization during trading in 2020.
Apple crossed the threshold on August 19, 2020, as its shares continued a powerful rally. The company’s valuation reflected both its enormous hardware business and the growing importance of services such as the App Store, iCloud, Apple Music, and Apple TV+.
The wording “during trading” matters because a company can briefly cross a market-cap threshold and then fall back below it before the closing bell. News reports often distinguish between an intraday milestone and a record closing valuation. Apple’s $2 trillion achievement was widely reported as the first of its kind.
Apple’s path is often compared with Microsoft’s. Microsoft later became the second U.S. company to reach $2 trillion, while Saudi Aramco also entered the group. The milestone did not mean Apple held $2 trillion in cash; it represented the market’s combined valuation of its outstanding shares.
