Nvidia became the first company to record a $1 trillion market-capitalization gain in a single year, in 2023.
Nvidia’s market value increased by more than $1 trillion during 2023 as investors rapidly repriced the company’s prospects in artificial intelligence computing. Its graphics processing units, or GPUs, became central to training and running large AI models, creating exceptional demand from cloud providers and technology companies.
This fact concerns the increase in market capitalization over a calendar year, not the company’s total value reaching exactly $1 trillion for the first time. Nvidia had already passed that valuation earlier. Market capitalization can change quickly because it reflects the current share price multiplied by shares outstanding. Nvidia was founded in 1993 and originally focused on graphics hardware; its later data-center and AI businesses became major drivers of its valuation.
