Microsoft became the first company to reach a $3 trillion market capitalization during a trading day in 2024.
Microsoft crossed the threshold briefly on January 24, 2024, as investors valued its shares at a level that placed the company above $3 trillion. Its market value was supported by cloud computing through Azure, enterprise software, and expectations surrounding artificial intelligence.
Apple had been the first company to touch a $3 trillion valuation, in January 2022. Microsoft’s milestone therefore marked a change in the competition at the top of the global market-cap rankings rather than the creation of the threshold itself.
Market-cap leadership can change quickly because it depends on share prices. Companies can move above or below one another without any immediate change to their factories, employees, or physical assets.
