PetroChina became the first company to reach a $1 trillion market value on the day of its 2007 IPO.
PetroChina shares began trading in Shanghai in November 2007, and the stock surged on its debut. The resulting market capitalization briefly exceeded $1 trillion, making PetroChina the first company associated with that valuation level at the time.
The milestone was short-lived because the share price fell sharply after the initial trading surge. This illustrates why market-cap records based on a single trading day can differ from records based on a company’s sustained valuation.
PetroChina is the publicly listed arm of China National Petroleum Corporation, one of China’s major state-owned energy groups. Its listing was separate from the later record-setting IPO of Saudi Aramco in 2019.
