PetroChina became the first company to reach a $1 trillion market capitalization through a public stock listing in China.
PetroChina briefly reached a valuation of about $1 trillion when its shares began trading in Shanghai in November 2007. The debut price was far above the company’s Hong Kong-listed valuation, creating an extraordinary first-day market value.
PetroChina is the publicly listed arm of China National Petroleum Corporation, one of China’s major state-owned energy groups. Its business covers oil and gas exploration, production, refining, chemicals, and sales.
The episode illustrates why market capitalization can vary sharply between exchanges. Investor enthusiasm, limited available shares, local trading conditions, and differences in valuation expectations all influenced the Shanghai price. PetroChina did not permanently retain the $1 trillion valuation, and the figure should not be confused with the company’s assets or government ownership.
