Alphabet became the first company among online search businesses to reach a $1 trillion market capitalization in January 2020.
Alphabet briefly reached the milestone on January 16, 2020. Alphabet is the parent company created in 2015 through a corporate restructuring of Google. Google remains its largest and best-known business, covering web search, online advertising, YouTube, Android, and cloud services.
The restructuring separated Google’s core internet businesses from other projects, including research and emerging technologies. Alphabet’s market value reflected the exceptional scale and profitability of Google’s advertising operations, particularly search advertising.
Alphabet’s achievement is sometimes described simply as Google reaching $1 trillion, because Google generated most of the company’s public identity and revenue. Technically, however, Alphabet is the publicly traded parent company. Its shares trade under the symbols GOOGL and GOOG.
