Amazon became the first company to lose $1 trillion in market value over roughly one year during the 2022 technology sell-off.
Amazon reached the distinction in November 2022, when its share-price decline from a pandemic-era peak reduced its market capitalization by approximately $1 trillion. The drop reflected higher interest rates, weaker economic expectations, slowing online-retail growth, and pressure on technology valuations.
This was a change in market valuation, not a direct loss of $1 trillion in cash from Amazon’s bank accounts. Market capitalization can fall rapidly when investors revise expectations about future earnings, even if a company continues operating and generating revenue.
Amazon had benefited strongly from the shift toward online shopping during the COVID-19 pandemic. As stores reopened and costs rose, investors reassessed the pace of growth. Other large technology companies also suffered major declines, but Amazon was the first to record this approximate trillion-dollar reduction.
