Amazon became the first company to lose $1 trillion in market value from its peak in November 2022.
Amazon’s market capitalization had reached about $1.88 trillion in July 2021. By November 2022, a broad technology-stock sell-off, rising interest rates, slowing pandemic-era online growth, and concerns about consumer demand had reduced its value by approximately $1 trillion.
The calculation compares the company’s market capitalization at its high point with its later market value; it does not mean Amazon paid out or physically lost $1 trillion in cash. Market value can fall because investors are willing to pay less for shares.
Amazon’s retail operation, cloud-computing division AWS, advertising business, and logistics network all influence how investors value the company. Its share price later recovered substantially, showing that market-cap losses are not permanent accounting write-offs.
