Amazon became the first company to lose $1 trillion in market value from its peak during the 2022 market downturn.
Amazon reached the distinction in November 2022, when its market capitalization had fallen by roughly $1 trillion from its 2021 peak. The decline reflected a broad technology-stock sell-off, rising interest rates, weaker economic expectations, and concerns about the growth and profitability of online retail.
Amazon’s valuation had expanded dramatically during the pandemic as consumers shifted toward online shopping and investors rewarded technology companies. When conditions normalized, the company faced slower retail growth, higher operating costs, and pressure to improve efficiency. Its cloud division, Amazon Web Services, remained strategically important but also faced changing corporate technology budgets.
Losing $1 trillion in market value does not mean Amazon paid out or physically lost that amount of cash. It describes a fall in the stock-market value of its outstanding shares. Such comparisons depend on the selected peak date and can change as share prices move.
