Which company became the first to exceed a US$500 billion market capitalization in the Middle East?

The story behind the answer

Saudi Aramco became the first company in the Middle East to exceed a US$500 billion market capitalization.

The milestone followed Saudi Aramco’s 2019 listing on the Saudi Stock Exchange, or Tadawul. The company began public trading with a valuation of roughly US$1.7 trillion, immediately placing it among the largest listed companies in the world and making it the dominant listed business in the Middle East.

Saudi Aramco is one of the world’s largest integrated oil and gas companies. Its operations include crude-oil production, refining, petrochemicals, shipping, and marketing. The Saudi government remains its controlling shareholder.

A market capitalization is not the same as the value of all national oil reserves. It is the market’s current valuation of the company’s publicly traded equity. That distinction matters because oil prices, production expectations, dividends, and geopolitical risks can all affect Saudi Aramco’s share price.
