Tencent became the first company to exceed a $500 billion market capitalization on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
The Chinese technology group’s valuation was driven by its dominant social and gaming businesses, including WeChat and major video-game investments. Its ecosystem also includes digital payments, online advertising, music, cloud services, and other internet products.
Tencent’s market-cap milestones are sometimes confused with Alibaba’s because both are major Chinese technology companies listed in Hong Kong and both have ranked among Asia’s most valuable firms. Their corporate structures and primary business strengths, however, are different.
Market capitalization records can be reported in different currencies and may vary by trading venue. The Hong Kong listing made Tencent’s milestone especially significant for Asian equity markets, where the company became a symbol of the region’s technology-sector expansion.
