Which company became the first to exceed a $2 trillion market capitalization in the energy sector?

The story behind the answer

Saudi Aramco became the first energy-sector company to exceed a $2 trillion market capitalization.

Saudi Aramco briefly reached a valuation above $2 trillion on its second day of trading, December 12, 2019. The milestone followed its record-setting IPO on the Saudi Stock Exchange and made it the first listed energy company to cross that valuation.

The company’s value reflected its enormous oil reserves, large-scale production, integrated refining and chemicals operations, and strategic importance to Saudi Arabia. Energy valuations can also be strongly influenced by oil prices, expected future demand, and government policy.

The $2 trillion figure was a market valuation rather than a measurement of the oil stored underground. Reserves, annual production, revenue, and market capitalization are separate concepts and should not be treated as interchangeable.
