Saudi Aramco became the first non-technology company to exceed a $2 trillion market capitalization.
The Saudi oil producer crossed the threshold after its initial public offering in December 2019. Although technology companies had driven many of the biggest valuation milestones, Saudi Aramco demonstrated that a traditional energy company could reach comparable market value through enormous reserves, production capacity, and profitability.
Saudi Aramco’s public listing was unusual because only a minority stake was offered to investors while the Saudi government retained control. The company’s shares trade on Tadawul, and its market value is affected by both company-specific results and global oil prices.
The category label “non-technology” is useful for comparison, but industries overlap. Saudi Aramco uses advanced geological, engineering, data, and refining technologies. The point is that its primary business is energy production and related activities rather than software, internet services, or semiconductor design.
