PetroChina became the first company to exceed a $1 trillion market value on its first trading day.
PetroChina’s Shanghai listing in November 2007 produced an extraordinary debut. Its shares more than doubled on the first day, briefly pushing the company’s market capitalization above $1 trillion. The valuation later fell sharply as the initial enthusiasm faded.
PetroChina is the listed arm of China National Petroleum Corporation, one of China’s major state-owned energy groups. Its business includes oil and gas exploration, production, refining, chemicals, and fuel distribution.
This record is often confused with the later achievement of companies that sustainably held trillion-dollar valuations. A first-day market value can be driven by limited available shares, strong demand, and speculative trading. It does not necessarily indicate that a company has generated $1 trillion in revenue or profits.
