Tesla became the first automotive company to exceed a $1 trillion market capitalization.
Tesla passed the $1 trillion valuation in October 2021 after its share price rose sharply. Investor enthusiasm reflected expectations for electric-vehicle growth, Tesla’s production expansion, battery technology, software, and possible future income from related services.
Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning founded Tesla Motors in 2003. Elon Musk joined as an early investor and became chairman; he later became chief executive. Tesla’s first production vehicle was the Roadster, introduced in 2008, followed by the Model S, Model X, Model 3, and Model Y.
The milestone concerns market capitalization rather than the number of vehicles produced. Traditional manufacturers such as Toyota and Volkswagen have much longer operating histories and broad global production networks, while Tesla’s valuation reflected expectations about future electric mobility as well as current results.
