PetroChina became the first company to exceed a $1 trillion market capitalization during intraday trading in 2007.
The milestone occurred when PetroChina’s Shanghai-listed shares surged on their first trading day after the company’s public offering. Its valuation briefly rose above $1 trillion before falling back, making the achievement temporary rather than a sustained closing value.
PetroChina is the listed arm of China National Petroleum Corporation, one of China’s major state-owned energy groups. Its business includes oil and gas exploration, production, refining, transportation, and sales.
The event is often confused with the later $1 trillion milestones reached by Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, and other technology companies. PetroChina’s 2007 valuation was driven largely by energy-market expectations and the excitement surrounding its domestic listing, not by a technology-sector boom.
