Facebook became the first social-media company to surpass a US$1 trillion market capitalization.
Facebook crossed the US$1 trillion mark on 28 June 2021 as its shares rose after a favorable court ruling involving the company’s antitrust litigation. At that time, Facebook operated the Facebook social network and also owned Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger.
The company’s market value reflected its huge global advertising business and the scale of its user networks. Facebook had gone public in 2012, and its shares traded on the Nasdaq under the ticker FB before the company changed its corporate name to Meta Platforms in 2021.
The milestone is therefore usually described historically using “Facebook,” even though the parent company is now called Meta Platforms. Facebook’s own social network remains one of Meta’s products, alongside Instagram, WhatsApp, and Threads.
