Facebook became the first social-media company to reach a $1 trillion market capitalization.
Facebook crossed the milestone in June 2021 after a U.S. court dismissed antitrust complaints that had sought to challenge the company’s position. Its market value reflected the scale of Facebook’s main platform and its other major social products, including Instagram and WhatsApp.
Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg, Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes in 2004. It became a public company in 2012 and later changed its corporate name to Meta Platforms in 2021.
The company’s corporate name is now Meta Platforms, but the historical market-cap milestone occurred when the listed company was still called Facebook. This distinction separates the platform’s familiar name from the parent corporation’s later rebranding.
