Which company became the first social-media company to exceed a $1 trillion market capitalization in 2021?

The story behind the answer

Facebook became the first social-media company to exceed a $1 trillion market capitalization in 2021.

Facebook crossed the threshold on June 28, 2021, when its share price rose after a favorable U.S. court ruling concerning antitrust claims. At the time, the company still traded under the ticker FB and had not yet adopted the corporate name Meta Platforms.

The company was founded by Mark Zuckerberg and fellow Harvard students in 2004. Its main platform grew into a global social network, while Instagram and WhatsApp broadened its reach and advertising business. Most of Facebook’s revenue came from digital advertising.

The milestone referred to the parent company’s total equity value. It did not mean that the Facebook website itself was valued separately from Instagram, WhatsApp, and the other businesses included in the corporate group.
