Nvidia became the first semiconductor maker to surpass US$1 trillion in market capitalization.
Nvidia crossed the milestone in May 2023 after investors responded to soaring demand for its graphics processors and data-center systems used in artificial-intelligence computing. The company had long been associated with computer graphics and gaming, but its CUDA software ecosystem also made its chips important for machine-learning workloads.
Nvidia was founded in 1993 by Jensen Huang, Chris Malachowsky, and Curtis Priem. Its best-known product families include GeForce graphics processors for consumers and data-center accelerators used by cloud and research customers.
The milestone is distinct from being the world’s largest semiconductor manufacturer by production volume. Nvidia designs chips and relies on external foundries, including Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, to fabricate many of them.
