Apple became the first publicly traded U.S. company to reach a $2 trillion market capitalization.
Apple passed the threshold on August 19, 2020, less than two years after becoming the first U.S. company valued at $1 trillion. The milestone followed a major rise in Apple’s share price and strong investor confidence in its hardware, software, and services ecosystem.
The calculation uses the market price of each share multiplied by the number of shares outstanding. Because share prices change continuously, market-cap milestones can be reached during trading and may not remain above the threshold at every later close.
Saudi Aramco had previously reached a roughly $2 trillion valuation around its 2019 listing, but Apple’s milestone is commonly described specifically as the first for a publicly traded U.S. company. That distinction matters when comparing global companies.
