Nvidia became the first publicly traded semiconductor company valued at $3 trillion.
Nvidia reached the milestone in June 2024 as investors continued buying shares tied to demand for artificial-intelligence computing. Its graphics processing units, or GPUs, became central to training and running large AI models in data centers.
The achievement placed Nvidia among the very largest public companies in history. Its market value rose rapidly as revenue and profit from data-center products expanded, although the share price remained capable of significant movement.
Nvidia is often described as a chip designer rather than a traditional manufacturer. It designs processors and software while relying on outside foundries for much of its physical production. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, a major contract manufacturer, is a separate company and should not be confused with Nvidia.
