Which company became the first publicly traded Indian company to exceed US$200 billion in market value?

The story behind the answer

Reliance Industries became the first publicly traded Indian company to exceed US$200 billion in market value.

Reliance crossed the US$200 billion threshold in September 2021 as its shares rose on expansion plans for its digital and retail businesses. The milestone made it the first Indian listed company to reach that valuation, although rankings and dollar conversions vary with exchange rates and daily share prices.

The company began with Dhirubhai Ambani’s textile business and expanded into petrochemicals, refining, oil and gas, telecommunications, retail, and digital services. Its Jio subsidiary transformed India’s mobile-data market after launching commercial services in 2016.

Reliance is controlled by chairman Mukesh Ambani and is listed on India’s National Stock Exchange and Bombay Stock Exchange. It is distinct from Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group, a separate corporate group formed after the Ambani family division.
