Apple became the first publicly traded company to reach a $1 trillion valuation in 2018 after a major share-price rise.
The milestone was reached on August 2, 2018, when Apple’s stock price moved high enough to place the total value of its outstanding shares above $1 trillion. The company’s quarterly results, iPhone performance, and expanding services business helped sustain investor interest around that time.
Apple’s achievement was notable because it showed how a company’s stock-market value can reflect expectations about future earnings as well as present performance. Investors were valuing Apple’s ecosystem, customer base, software distribution, and ability to launch new products—not simply adding up its factories and inventory.
The wording “publicly traded” is important. Private companies can receive very high valuations in funding rounds, but their shares do not trade openly on a stock exchange and their valuations are not continuously updated in the same way.
