Apple became the first publicly traded business to reach a $1 trillion valuation.
The milestone occurred on August 2, 2018, when Apple’s market capitalization reached approximately $1 trillion. Saudi Aramco is often mentioned in discussions of trillion-dollar companies, but its public listing came later, in December 2019. Apple therefore holds the widely cited record among public companies.
Apple’s rise was powered especially by the iPhone, introduced in 2007, and by a tightly integrated ecosystem of devices, software, and services. Investors valued not only current sales but also expectations for future earnings and customer loyalty.
The phrase “publicly traded” matters because privately held companies can receive very large valuations in funding rounds without having a continuously quoted stock price. Market capitalization also changes daily, so crossing a round-number threshold is a market event rather than a permanent legal status.
