Apple became the first public company to reach a $3 trillion market capitalization at the end of a trading day.
Apple closed above the $3 trillion level on June 30, 2023, after first briefly touching that valuation during trading in January 2022. The distinction matters because an intraday price can cross a threshold and then fall back before the closing bell.
Apple’s ascent was supported by the scale of the iPhone ecosystem, recurring revenue from services, premium hardware pricing, and a global customer base. Investors also treated Apple as a comparatively resilient technology company with substantial cash generation and shareholder returns.
Market capitalization is based on the closing share price and shares outstanding, so it is separate from enterprise value, which also considers debt and cash. Apple’s record did not mean it was the world’s most valuable company permanently; rankings can change as prices move.
