Which company became the first oil producer to surpass a $2 trillion market capitalization?

The story behind the answer

Saudi Aramco became the first oil producer to surpass a $2 trillion market capitalization in December 2019.

The company reached the milestone soon after its public listing in Riyadh. Its enormous valuation reflected its position as one of the world’s largest crude-oil producers, its extensive reserves, and expectations for substantial dividend payments.

Saudi Aramco’s public offering sold only a portion of the company. Most shares remained under government ownership, making the listing a partial privatization rather than a sale of the entire national oil company.

Oil-company valuations can change with crude prices, production policy, refining margins, and energy-transition expectations. Saudi Aramco’s $2 trillion moment therefore represented a market estimate at a particular time, not a permanent ranking. Apple later reached $2 trillion on U.S. markets.
