Berkshire Hathaway became the first non-technology U.S. company to exceed a $1 trillion market capitalization in August 2024.
Berkshire crossed the threshold on August 28, 2024, making it one of the very few U.S. companies ever to attain that valuation. Its Class A shares are among the most expensive publicly traded shares in the world, although market capitalization depends on all share classes together.
The company is led by Warren Buffett and owns or invests in businesses across insurance, railroads, utilities, manufacturing, energy, and consumer products. Major wholly owned operations include GEICO and BNSF Railway.
Berkshire is sometimes described as an investment company, but its broad operating businesses distinguish it from a pure technology firm. Its milestone also highlighted how unusual trillion-dollar valuations had become outside technology and communications.
