Saudi Aramco became the first listed company to reach a $2 trillion market capitalization in 2019.
Saudi Aramco reached the valuation on December 12, 2019, during its second day of trading on the Saudi Stock Exchange. Its initial public offering had priced shares at 32 Saudi riyals, and the stock rose to the exchange’s daily limit after listing. At that point, the company’s market value was reported at approximately $2 trillion.
The valuation reflected Saudi Aramco’s enormous oil reserves, production capacity, profitability, and strategic importance to Saudi Arabia. The listing was part of the country’s broader economic reform program associated with Vision 2030.
This milestone is separate from the later U.S. technology-company milestones. Apple first crossed $2 trillion in August 2020, while Nvidia reached $2 trillion in 2024. Market capitalization is based on the public share price and does not represent a government’s entire economic value or the company’s physical reserves alone.
