Nvidia became the first computer-chip maker to reach a $3 trillion market capitalization.
Nvidia crossed $3 trillion in June 2024 as investors continued to buy shares linked to demand for artificial-intelligence computing. Its graphics processing units, or GPUs, are widely used to train and run large AI models.
The company began in 1993 and originally focused on graphics chips for computers and video games. Its CUDA software platform later helped make Nvidia hardware useful for general-purpose parallel computing, including data-center workloads.
Nvidia’s market value rose rapidly, but market capitalization is not the same as sales or profit. The company’s 10-for-1 stock split in June 2024 lowered the price of each individual share while leaving the overall value approximately unchanged at the time.
