Nvidia became the first company valued at more than $2 trillion during 2024.
Nvidia crossed the $2 trillion market-capitalization level in February 2024 as investors continued buying shares in the company. Its graphics-processing units had become essential infrastructure for training and running artificial-intelligence systems.
The company was founded in 1993 and initially became known for graphics chips used in personal computers and video games. It later expanded into data-center computing, where its accelerators and software ecosystem became central to machine-learning development.
Nvidia’s market-capitalization rise was unusually rapid because the company combined strong revenue growth with very high expectations for future AI demand. Market capitalization measures the value investors assign to outstanding shares; it is not the same as annual sales or the company’s physical assets.
