Which company became the first company from India to exceed a $200 billion market capitalization?

The story behind the answer

Reliance Industries became the first company from India to exceed a $200 billion market capitalization.

Reliance Industries crossed the $200 billion market-capitalization level in September 2021. The Indian conglomerate’s valuation was supported by its large energy business, telecommunications arm Jio, retail operations, and investments from major global companies into its digital and consumer businesses.

Reliance was founded by Dhirubhai Ambani and grew from a textiles enterprise into one of India’s largest corporate groups. Its businesses span oil refining and petrochemicals, telecommunications, digital services, retail, and newer clean-energy initiatives.

Market capitalization measures the value investors assign to the company’s listed equity. It is different from Reliance’s total group revenue, enterprise value, or the value of a particular subsidiary. The company’s position can change as share prices move, while comparisons with other Indian firms also depend on whether subsidiaries are separately listed or remain within the parent company.
